Classical Tradition Piano Studio Policy

Studio information:

The studio program consists of learning:

  • to read music, eventually sight-reading even the most difficult music,
  • piano technique for the purpose of playing without injury or undue exertion,
  • music theory so that a student understands the principles of composition,
  • music history,
  • how to accompany vocalists and other musicians,
  • about composers’ lives which enrich the understanding of music being studied,
  • music appreciation by listening to classical music,
  • performance skills to polish appearance,
  • practice methods for efficient accurate learning,
  • self-confidence by playing for the teacher, or for family members,
  • to accept critical feedback on performance in the lesson.

Each student is taught according to the learning style most appropriate for that individual. Positive support is offered in an unconditionally accepting atmosphere during the private lesson. Learning to play the piano takes time and effort, but the rewards are great.

Tuition

Payment for the month’s lessons is due the first lesson of the month. No bills will be sent through the mail.  You may choose to have a weekly lesson, every other week, or whatever suits your schedule.  My fees are:

30 minutes: $20
45 minutes: $30

We may talk at the lesson, but you will still be given your full 30 minutes of instruction.  As a result, a 30 minute lesson could take more than 30 minutes because I do not expect you to pay for our conversation before or after a lesson.

NOTE:  I provide all music free for each student from my extensive music library.

If I get sick, take vacation or cancel unexpectedly, the month’s regular fee will be reduced.

Any fees for insufficient funds checks will be charged back to the student.

Missed Lessons and Make-Up Lessons

Please notify me at least one week (or not less than 24 hours if possible) in advance of a missed lesson.  If I am ill or must cancel a lesson for any reason, your monthly bill will be reduced accordingly.  The exception to this policy is your illness, or any other emergency which could not be foreseen.

Bad Weather

If you are concerned about road conditions, please call and let me know.  Some students who live out of town may not be able to drive on country roads.  If the forecast is unfavorable, I will make calls in the morning to cancel lessons for that day.

Parking

Parking is available in front of the house on the circular driveway.

Materials

The student should bring a good-size notebook and their music to every lesson.

Metronome

A metronome is an important practice aide and is an investment a student will use forever. I will notify you when it is time to purchase a metronome. The cost is approximately $30.

Piano Maintenance

Your piano should be tuned at least once a year; twice a year is better.  The technician can adjust sticking keys, squeaking pedals, or other malfunctions.  I can provide the name of a reputable tuner/technician.  I do not receive a referral fee from any piano technician.

Communications

Please feel free to contact me at any time about your your progress.  Thank you for giving me the opportunity to teach you how to play the piano.
